Studies have shown that around 30% of people in the UAE suffer from high blood pressure. It is a condition that can lead to several life-threatening diseases, the most prominent amongst them being a stroke. This percentage is only expected to rise in the future, so it's high time that we start paying attention to our lifestyle.
The percentage of young women diagnosed with high blood pressure has also seen a significant rise in recent times. Medicine can help in controlling blood pressure to a great extent, but wouldn't it be better to switch to a healthier lifestyle instead?
Regular exercise has a high number of benefits already established. But there is one particular exercise that can significantly help young women regulate their blood pressure: Pilates.
High blood pressure means having a systolic bp of over 120 and a diastolic bp of more than 80. In a recent study, young obese women between 19 to 27 years of age who were diagnosed with high blood pressure went through 12 weeks of Pilates. They exercised for one hour, three times a week. These sessions consisted of 10 minutes of warm-up, 40 minutes of general Pilates, and 10 minutes of cool-down.
On the completion of the stipulated time, participants noticed a significant improvement in their cardiovascular health. They experienced lower aortic blood pressure, brachial systolic blood pressure, and aortic pulse pressure.
The same study also found that the participating women had reduced body fat percentage, even though there was no reduction in their energy intake. This was a significant observation considering the fact that increased body weight is the most common cause of high blood pressure.
These findings, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, clearly show that Pilates for young, obese women has some distinct benefits. These benefits are not restricted to regulating blood pressure alone. Doing Pilates can prove to be a life-changing decision. It can help you lead a longer and healthier life. It doesn't matter whether you do Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates, what matters is that you do it regularly.
Won't it be great if you can stop medications for high blood pressure because now everything is under control?
